Center for Alcohol Studies
The Center of Alcohol Studies (CAS) is a multidisciplinary institute dedicated to acquisition and dissemination of knowledge on psychoactive substance use and related phenomena with primary emphasis on alcohol use and consequences. The Center's broad program of basic and applied research is conducted by scientists drawn chiefly from the biological sciences (principally biochemistry and neuropharmacology), psychology (both clinical and experimental), and sociology. In 1981, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) launched the Alcohol Policies Project to help focus public and policy maker attention on high-leverage policy reforms to reduce the devastating health and social consequences of drinking. Since then, the project has worked with thousands of organizations and individuals to promote a comprehensive, prevention-oriented policy strategy to change the role of alcohol in society. The National Alcohol Research Centers are funded through the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). The Alcohol Research Centers Program investigates the causes, diagnosis, treatment, control, prevention, and consequences of alcohol abuse and alcoholism. The Alcohol Research Centers provide long-term (typically 5 years) support for interdisciplinary research that focuses on particular aspects of alcohol abuse, alcoholism, or other alcohol-related problems.
